Neo Luddism (negative impact of technology)

The application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes is growing day by day. Technology solves problems with the various invention. Technology has both negative and positive impacts. The pace of technology is transforming society which has made life easy but also created inequality between people. The rise of technology (such as nuclear technology, automation) has raised many questions doubting technology. Neo-Luddism or new Luddism is an ideology opposing many forms of technology. This ideology was active in the early stage of the 90s. People having the same ideology is called neo-Luddite. Neo Luddites oppose technology that is materialistic or destructive of society.Neo Luddism (negative impact of technology)

Rise of technology

As a student of information technology, I have seen Technology has a big impact on the industrial revolution which has caused a large scale of urbanization. The technology was enhancing productivity with various inventions which helped industries work fast, easy and profitable. Due to this reason technology created many workers unemployed and in this period the labor wage started decreasing. This has created a big economic gap between people. Neo Luddism ideology is critical about technology. Neo Luddite is growing and cautious to adopt rising technology. Technology may be great but it can be harmful too. Technology is changing our society day by day. During my research I have found data from 1979 to 2008 U.S population has increased by 35% and manufacturing employments have dropped 31% from 19.4 million jobs to 13.5 million jobs. Technology invention has eliminated the jobs of humans by reducing the price of production. The adaption of technology has created huge unemployment for blue-collar jobs such as labor. It has also created a fear of losing jobs towards workers in various fields. Everyone is working very hard even when productivity has increased because of the fear of losing the job.

Internet

The Internet is one of the popular inventions of Technology. It is a great source of information but every source is not reliable and trustworthy. I found 40% of the world’s population is using social media. Technology has reduced distance between people but it has also created distance of social relationships between people. The Internet has grown and every new generation is now involving in social media. Social media is very addictive, people on average spend two hours every day. Using computers for a long period can cause burring the vision. The screen of a computer can generate radiation that can harm the eyes. According to me, Social media has a good impact on society but it also has a toxic environment. People have too much involved their life in social media. It can cause distractions while we are doing focused work. As more users are using the internet everyone may not have good intentions.

Increasing the use of computers has increased computer crimes. Technology is growing rapidly and breaching our privacy. Nowadays, privacy issues are also rising as a student of information technology privacy of an individual is very important. Tracking location and spying information of an individual can be very easy for professionals because of electronic devices connected to a network. Big corporate are collecting data of people and data can be the next source of income. Many websites collect data and use them for advertisement and marketing. Websites collecting data can track location and know users’ likes and dislikes. Every individual has a different experience in social media but as I have seen social media it can influence people’s perception. I have seen a piece of news about Cambridge Analytica which has collected millions of data of American citizens without their concern which helped Donald Trump to elect as a president of America. From this scenario, I can tell social media can influence and manipulate people. Mental health professionals are getting concerned about the impact of social media on mental health.

 Digital divide

According to me, technology has created a Digital divide between people. Aleph Molinari described the digital divide as,” The Digital Divide is the gap between individuals and communities that have access to information technologies and those that don’t”. Mobile, internet, computer, etc are technologies creating a digital divide. The Internet has been a great source for information but everyone can’t access the internet because of poverty which creates information poverty. Every day new inventions are coming into the market and everyone can’t afford those inventions. Technology is made for the betterment of human life but it is causing enormous negative effects on human life and creating division.

Technology impact on the environment

Technology has a negative impact such as climate, energy, water and creates waste. The industry is consuming energy heavily. As the population is increasing use of vehicles using energy such as fuel is also increasing which is increasing air pollution. The usage of energy is affecting the earth’s climate. I have seen so many articles about global warming .technologies releasing carbon dioxide can be one of the causes of the greenhouse. Even in the field of agriculture uses technology which has a negative impact. Using pesticides, fertilizer and such chemicals can harm the soil. In context of Nepal I have not seen waste management from industry which is polluting the environment.

I found neo-Luddism is a philosophy that opposes technology that hampers human life. It shows the technological influence on people’s life. People should know what they are using and how can they impact our lives. I found that while using technology people should be aware about how its working and its impacts in a long term. During my research I found various impacts of technology.

suicide during lockdown in Nepal

The country has been under lockdown, against coronavirus disease, since March 24. The country has been under lockdown, against coronavirus disease, since March 24.A total of 875 people have committed suicide during the lockdown period in Nepal.38 people committed suicide in the Kathmandu valley alone. Many psychiatrists have linked the deaths with mental health of the people, who have been forced to stay indoor during lockdown.

“Loneliness, depression and stress are bound to consume a person with mental illness when they are confined within the walls of their home. And since they cannot reach out to their counselors and friends during this period, there is a high chance of them becoming emotionally volatile,” Joshi told the Post. During the period of lockdown, Joshi says family support could play a crucial role for a person with mental illness.

“If suicidal thoughts come, people need to share with friends and family members. Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. It can be stopped through the support of a closed one. The TUTH has a 24-hour mental health hotline number,” Dr Pant adds.

{The 24-hour mental health hotline number of TUTH is: 9840021600}

Actor Sushant Singh Rajput dies by suicide

Indian actor Sushant Singh Rajput, who rose to become a formidable

presence on the big screen, committed suicide. The actor in the movie

‘Kedarnath’, ‘MS Dhoni’ was found hanging at his Bandra residence in

Mumbai. Mumbai police are investigating in the death of the 34-year-old

Sushant Singh Rajput.

The Patna-born Rajput became an instant hit with his good looks and boyish

charm when he was noticed in the famous soap on Zee TV’s ‘Pavitra Rishta’

in 2009. He made his Bollywood debut in the buddy drama ‘Kai Po Che!’ in

2013, for which he also received a Filmfare nomination for Best Male Debut.

The same year, he was also seen in the romantic comedy ‘Shuddh Desi

Romance’ 2013, which was followed by the titular detective in the action

thriller ‘Detective Byomkesh Bakshy!’ in 2015.

Last week, the ‘MS Dhoni’ actor had posted a highly-evocative post on

Instagram invoking his mother’s memories. In a slightly-cryptic note, he

remembered his mother who had passed away in 2002. His post with the

hashtag Mother in Hindi read:

Blurred past evaporating from teardrops

/Unending dreams carving an arc of smile/And a fleeting life, / negotiating

between the two

.

Meanwhile, B-town went into shock as the news of his death was confirmed.

From industry colleagues to friends and fans who started furiously posting

pictures with the late actor, everyone recalled their memories and

association. Film-maker Kunal Kapoor was one of the first ones to take to

Twitter and he recalled having met the actor just before the lockdown began,

and found the news of his death as incredulous.

Peaceful protest enough is enough

Protest was held in baluwatar, the premises of Nepal's
Prime Minister's residence, on the seventy-eighth day
of the nation-wide lockdown on the issue of corona prevention,
pay taxes and corruption while maintaining social distance.
After not being heard from the talks, not being heard from
social media and newspapers, people were compelled to
protest in front of Baluwatar. Protestor urge against the
government to expand PCR testing, correct the quarantine
facilities and demand for proper utilization of government
funds to control the possible outbreak of Coronavirus. People are
fed up with government’s misplaced priorities putting citizens
lives at risk.
MAIN AGENDA OF THIS PROTEST WERE

100% PCR
 ZERO unsafe Quarantines
STOP USING RDTs

PROPER USE OF 1.3 BILLION USD,

The police tried to explain to the protestors they were violating
the rule that no more than 25 people could gather during the
lockdown and asked them to disperse.Despite requesting
Nepal Police again and again with all the politeness just for
next 30mins of allowance the action they repelled was extremely
brutal. What started as a peaceful-chanting of demands ended in
chaos after Nepal Police charged the protesters with water
cannons & batons. A total of 9 arrests & physical harassment
dispersed the gathering.

Advantage of online class

Variety of programs and courses: From traditional four-year universities to completely online career colleges, higher education today offers a variety of options for students. This means that no matter what students study, from nursing to neuroscience, they can find the courses or programs they need online. Students can also earn every academic degree online, from a career certificate to a doctorate.

Lower total costs: Online programs prove a more affordable option than traditional colleges. Though not all online degrees offer less expensive net tuition prices than traditional colleges, associated expenses almost always cost less. For example, there are no commuting costs, and sometimes required course materials, such as textbooks, are available online at no cost. In addition, many colleges and universities accept credits earned via free massive open online courses.

More comfortable learning environment: Commercials that feature online students studying in their pajamas only skims the surface of one of the benefits of online education: no physical class sessions. Students listen to lectures and complete assignments sent to them electronically, with no need to fight traffic, leave work early for class, or miss important family time.

Convenience and flexibility: Online courses give students the opportunity to plan study time around the rest of their day, instead of the other way around. Students can study and work at their convenience. Course material is always accessible online, making special library trips unnecessary. All of these benefits help students balance work and family commitments with their education.

More interaction and greater ability to concentrate: WWhile contradictory evidence about the rate of online student participation versus participation in traditional courses exists, one thing remains certain: Online courses offer shy or more reticent students the opportunity to participate in class discussions more easily than face-to-face class sessions. Some students even report better concentration in online classes due to the lack of classroom activity.

Career advancement: Students can take online courses and even complete entire degrees while working, while in-between jobs, or while taking time to raise a family. This academic work will explain any discontinuity or gaps in a resume as well. Also, earning a degree can show ambitiousness to prospective employers and a desire to remain informed and prepared for new challenges.

Continue in your profession: Even if someone wants to complete a degree, it may not mean they want to leave their current job. For most students today, increasing college costs mandate that some students continue working while in school. The previously mentioned flexibility of online programs enable students to keep working while also pursuing academic credentials.

Avoid commuting: During snowstorms and thunderstorms, colleges may cancel classes to avoid putting commuting students at risk of dangerous driving conditions. Rather than miss important class sessions, students in online courses can always “attend” by participating in discussion boards or chat sessions, turning in their work on time, and watching lectures or reading materials. Many students also find substantial savings on fuel costs with no commute for classes.

Improve your technical skills: Even the most basic online course requires the development of new computer skills, as students learn to navigate different learning management systems (LMS) and programs. The participation skills students learn within their online courses translate to many professions, including creating and sharing documents, incorporating audio/video materials into assignments, completing online training sessions, etc. Some schools even offer students free laptops or iPad.

Transfer credits: For college students who want to attend summer classes, but live too far from their colleges and/or work summer jobs, taking online classes from an accredited college and transferring the credits to their primary college can be beneficial. Students can earn college credit while still enjoying their summer vacation or fulfilling the responsibilities of their seasonal employment. Similarly, if a college or university does not offer enough open sections of a required course, students can take the course online at another college and transfer the credit

Education system of Nepal needs a change

Education system of Nepal needs a change

Education has great importance in the development of a country.
Education and development of the country work hand to hand.lack of education create poverty and a lack of economic development in a country.  For over two decades, Nepal has been working to uplift educational standards by providing quality higher education to its citizens but there are many obstacles and hurdles that are emerging.

  1. location of colleges and universities: Almost all the good higher secondary colleges, coaching institutes, engineering, and medical colleges/universities are located in and around our capital city Kathmandu. The school that is run by the government is not committed to giving a good education due to various problems. Private and boarding schools are not in reach in the remote and rural areas. The government and local bodies are not serious in education. That means students have to come and live in the capital city for a good education.
  2. Outdated Education: Our syllabus hasn’t been updated for ages. I think there haven’t been any significant changes for a decade in school, college, and universities course. all these haven’t been updated. This makes our education system outdated.
  3. Poor teaching staff: In Nepali society, there is less respect towards the teaching professionThis gives a bad impression of teachers and thus we don’t have qualified and passionate teachers, educators, administrators in our country. Students in Nepal choose subjects that they don’t have an interest in because of our society.
  4. Poor Online Support: We do not have any central online support system for educational services. It’s really difficult to get the syllabus, and other related educational materials online. in this modern age, education should be digitally available for all students which creates equality between students which will increase the literate rate of Nepal. Students from Nepal have created a website called collegeinit for students searching college and they are also trying to provide proper notes for students for free.
  5. Politics. Limited educational and employment opportunities in Nepal are among the factors driving the outflow of Nepali students. Political instability – there have been nine different governments between 2008 and 2016 alone – and devastating earthquakes in 2015 have worsened social conditions in the country. However, the government seeks to improve the education system with reforms, such as the extension of compulsory basic education to eight years of schooling. International student mobility in Nepal is predominantly outbound. While there is little public data available on international student enrollments in Nepal, inbound mobility to Nepal is minor by international standards. The lack of top-quality universities, scholarships and post-graduate work opportunities in Nepal’s lesser economy limit the attractiveness of the country as a destination for international students.

If the government can work in these issues of the educational system of Nepal it would create a developing scenario in Nepal.
